My Services - Explained
Writing
I specialize in nonfiction, research-based, educational,
informative writing.
I also enjoy reporting and writing about “good work” —
the work of individuals, communities, and organizations that promote education,
provide insight, and invite participation. I strive to write in a way that
shows, rather than lists, how real change takes place and good decisions
are made.
Editing
As your editor, I will check your document for spelling, grammar, and consistent style. But more than that, I work with you, as your reader, to point out where logical connections could be stronger, and your main point is un- or underdeveloped. Writers concentrate on meaning; editors concentrate on how the meaning is expressed. Working together, we invite the reader’s attention, interest, and retention.
Mechanical edit (sometimes called “proofreading”
but not the same)
A mechanical edit eliminates grammatical and stylistic errors
that distract the reader from your intended message and gives your publication
that professional polish.
Substantive edit (more
than polish)
Your editor performs a mechanical edit and makes deeper editorial changes
or suggestions to ensure clarity, cohesive flow,
and meaningful emphasis.
When your writing is clear, your reader absorbs new information easily. Your reader won’t think: This is confusing. What does it mean?
When your writing flows, the reader is carried smoothly forward. The writer employs language that connects each idea to the next in a natural manner. This careful wording orients the reader, summarizes past information, and announces what is to come.
When your writing places emphasis on main points, the reader understands what is most significant and what is secondary, developmental information. Your reader’s retention is high.
Proofread
As proofreader, I will compare the editor’s final approved copy with
the copy now prepared to be printed or published by the typesetter, desktop
publisher, or web designer. The proofreader may also point out any errors
or omissions the final edit might have missed.
Manuscript Preparation
I will follow the guidelines of your journal or book publisher to prepare your manuscript for submission. These guidelines usually dictate page formatting; art, figures, and tables package with caption manuscript; cross-checking for match and style of citations, source notes, references, and bibliography; obtaining permissions; design and numbering of tables; pagination; overall consistent application of a specific editorial style, such as MLA, APA, or Chicago; and so on.
Project Management
I bring to your project the key perspectives of the Big Picture and the (not-so) Little Details. Giving the responsibility of Project Management to me will liberate you and your own staff. You will be delegating to an experienced professional editor and manager, who understands planning and meeting deadlines, accuracy and thoroughness, and design that complements, rather than compromises, the text.
As your Project Manager, I will
- set out the overall plan for the project with you in order to
a. ensure it reflects your mission or business accurately
b. examine how it works within your overall communications
c. identify your objectives and target audience
d. confirm physical specifications for print media
e. determine timelines
f. adhere to budget - coordinate the work tasks of writing, editing, research, formatting, graphic design, production. For projects requiring layout, I will use desktop software such as MS Publisher, or for design of more technical complexity, I work with your graphic designer, or one of several professional designers whose work I know for creative and technical excellence.
- organize the parts – text, photographs, art work, cover, index, etc., into an appropriate, reader-friendly, attractive format that fits with your purpose and audience and is appropriate for the method of publishing and distribution
- negotiate graphic and printing costs
- oversee proofreading, approvals, and printing stages
